7 Foods That Help To Keep Your Mouth Clean

July 7, 2018

A happy smile is a healthy smile! Although there are certain foods that can have a negative impact on our teeth, there are some superheroes that can save them too! We’re taking a look at 7 superfoods that offer a quick (and yummy) option to help keep your mouth clean throughout the day. Interestingly enough, some of these foods can also help to naturally whiten your teeth, too!

  • Carrots

Chewing on raw carrots increases saliva, which in turn can help to clean your mouth. The vitamin A found in carrots boasts a whole host of health benefits; it can help not only help with your eyesight, but to strengthen your tooth enamel too.

  • Strawberries

Strawberries contain malic acid, which can act as a bleaching agent, and is present in most commercial tooth-whitening products. Therefore, eating strawberries can help to naturally whiten your teeth. Strawberries are also high in vitamin C, which can be helpful in removing plaque.

  • Apples

Like strawberries, apples also contain high levels of malic acid. Additionally, chomping down on a big crunchy apple can help to gently wash away debris, stains, and bacteria from around your mouth.

  • Broccoli

When eaten raw, broccoli can gently clean tooth surfaces, which can also help to remove unsightly stains. The iron found in broccoli can protect tooth enamel, this is done by coating teeth in an invisible barrier which keep cavity-causing acids away.

  • Water

Water has an abundance of good qualities aside from just keeping you hydrated. Water can also help to prevent stains forming on your teeth - just swirl is around your mouth after eating to keep your smile bright and white. Water can also help to reduce your mouth’s acidity which decreases the chance of tooth enamel damage. However we would suggest you opt for still water, as sparkling can actually erode your teeth.

  • Celery

At 95% water, these are the perfect snack to keep your mouth clean by stimulating the increase of salvia.

  • Pineapple

Pineapple is the only fruit that contains an enzyme called bromelain, which is a natural stain remover. Bromelain can also help separate plaque from the surface of your teeth, which can prevent tooth erosion and discourages cavities from forming, resulting in healthier and whiter teeth.

Remember, these foods are not a quick fix to cleaning your teeth, we recommend you still brush twice a day to keep your mouth and teeth clean and healthy!
